2013 IIHS Top Safety Picks
IIHS Top Safety Picks, again.

For the second year in a row, the prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has recognized eight Volkswagen models as Top Safety Picks.2 And, after passing an even more rigorous test, the Volkswagen Passat was honored with a new distinction: Top Safety Pick+ (for models built after Oct. 2012).3 We could get used to this.

All eight models received a good rating in all four tests:

  • Frontal Offset Test
  • Roof Strength Test
  • Side Impact Test
  • Rear Crash Protection/
    Head Restraint Rating

5-Star Safety Rating2

The car that started it all is still a safe bet. The 2013 Beetle has earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "Overall" means it didn't just do well in one category — it did well in all of them. That's serious safety in a fun package.

#1 Motor Trend Midsize Sedan Comparison

Volkswagen Passat

Ranked #1 in Midsize Sedan Comparison.2

In a recent comparison test by Motor Trend, the 2012 Volkswagen Passat topped the top-selling midsize sedans in its class, including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and, well, every other midsize they tested. Which means not only do our drivers love the Passat, but it seems that the critics do too. This might be cause for a victory lap.

Six cars. Three different routes. One fantastic story. The Passat TDI® full-size sedan bested the competition in Edmunds.com 40-MPG Challenge.4 Going up against nothing but compact cars or smaller, the Passat TDI still managed to get the most by using the least. In more ways than one, it was no contest.
